William and Laura (Cook) Newberry - Biography

My parents, William Newberry, 1866-1941, and Laura (Cook) Hinkle Newberry, 1870-1942, were married in DeWitt County on June 18, 1887. Laura was the daughter of Isaac Hinkle and Elizabeth Cook and a granddaughter of George Hinkle. William Newberry was the son of Miles Clayton Newberry, 1822-1869, and Mary Jane (Hurley) Newberry. 1830-1902, and grandson of John Newberry, died 1821, and Hannah (Clayton) Newberry, 1801-1873. Mary Jane Hurley was a daughter of Dennis Hurley, 1797-1867, and Mary M. (Connell) Newberry, 1797-1850, and granddaughter of James Hurley, 1760-1850, a Revolutionary War veteran and Lydia (Riddle) Hurley.

My parents were the father and mother of the following: Nellie, 1889-1964; Raymond, 1892-1949; Lillie, 1894-1969; Lee Roy, 1896-; Hattie, 1898-; Irvin 1900-1972; Mayme Rose, 1902-1964; Leonard, 1905-1985; George 1907-1944. George died with the Parachute troops in World War II.

Nellie married Peter Thies and was the mother of three girls, Ethel, Nora, and Pauline. Tessona married Fred Thrasher and they were the parents fo three boys and three girls, Thurman, Ona Francis, Shurman, Donald, Adeline and Caroline. Raymond was the father of one son, Joseph Cole by first wife. Lillie was the mother of two children. Velma and Reed. I had no children but Mayme Rose had one that died young. Irvin was the father of one son, Richard. Leonard was the father of two daugthers, Betty and Laura Lou.

I have some nieces and nephews that look after my brother, Lee Roy, and me as we are the only two left in our generation. Lee Roy is in a nursing home in Decatur and I live in the high rise housing in Clinton. I worked for the State at the Peoria State Hospital before my retirement. —Hattie E. Race
