Morris J. Vannote, aged 51, resident of Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois. States he was a
Corporal in Company I, 107th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He has not been in the military
or naval service since 21 Jun 1865. He was not in any other service than Company I, 107th
Illinois Volunteer Infantry. His Post Office is Mansfield, Illinois.

(2) Physical Examination Report – 20 May 1891- Monticello, Illinois
Upon examination we find the following objective conditions: Pulse Rate, 80 & intermittent;
respiration 20; temperature, 98; height, 5 feet 8 inches; weight, 170 pounds; age, 51 years.
"We find on examination, this soldier has chronic Diarrhea contracted in the service – continues to have it every two or three weeks – discharges thin & watery – occasionally mucous & bloody – much prostration when attacked – continuous several days – skin dry & husky – tongue coated & red on sides & tip – appetite variable – stomach sour – digestion bad. "
"He has Hemorrhoids – they come down externally – one large tumor, an inch or more in circumference and numerous small ones – bleed freely at times, are painful, tender & congested always – so much so at this time we did not use speculum to explore rectum for morbid conditions. He suffers great pain when walking, working or lifting, and is unable to do much of either."
"He has neuralgia of face – only when exposed to sudden atmospheric changes."
"Has had a slight injury to left leg, from threshing machine, causing some lameness. His rheumatism is the result of this injury."
"Aside from above disabilities, other conditions are normal."
(3) Declaration For Pension: Act of 11 May 1912 – 25 May 1912 – Piatt Co, Illinois
Morris J. Vannote, aged 72, resident of Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois. States he enlisted at Mount
Pleasant, DeWitt Co, Illinois as a Corporal in David Lowry’s Company I, 107th Illinois Volunteer
Infantry, and was discharged 21 Jun 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina. He was described as 5 feet,
8 3/4 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair and his occupation was farmer. He was
born 7 Feb 1840 at Monmouth Co, New Jersey. After leaving the service he has lived in DeWitt and
Piatt Counties, Illinois. He has a pension under Certificate No. 647481. He makes this
declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll under the provisions of the Act of
May 11, 1912. His Post Office is Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois.

(4) Declaration For Pension: Act of 11 May 1912 – 9 Feb 1915 – Piatt Co, Illinois
Morris J. Vannote, aged 75, resident of Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois. He gives the same information
as he did when filling out the Declaration For Pension dated 25 May 1912.
Witnesses: Wallace Wack and John G. Myers.
(5) Declaration for Widow’s Pension: Act of 19 Apr 1908, amended by Act of 8 Sep 1916
– 4 Apr 1919 - Peoria Co, Illinois
Selah Vannote, aged 72, states she was born 11 Apr 1847 at Licking Co, Ohio. She is the widow
of Morris J. Vannote, who enlisted 2 Aug 1862 at Mt. Pleasant, Illinois in Co I, 107th Illinois
Volunteer Infantry and discharged 21 Jun 1865. He had no other service. They were married
11 Jan 1868 at Mt. Pleasant, now Farmer City, DeWitt Co, Illinois by Rev. E. L. Waller and neither of
them had previously been married. Said soldier died 10 Mar 1919 at Mansfield, Illinois.

(6) Examiner’s Memorandum Sheet – Stamped 23 Apr 1919 by Civil War Division
Morris J. Vannote, Co. I 107th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
Claimant: Mrs. Selah Vannote, Mansfield, Illinois.

· Death of Soldier: 18 Mar 1919
· Birth of Soldier: 7 Feb 1840
· Birth of Widow: 11 Apr 1847
Soldier served more than 90 days and was honorably discharged.
(7) Affidavit – 1 May 1919 – Piatt Co, Illinois
Charles W. Hull, aged 49, resident of Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois, states he is a duly licensed
physician and surgeon in Illinois and that he attended Morris J. Van Note, deceased, of Mansfield,
Illinois from 10 Jan 1918 to 17 Mar 1919, and that Morris J. Van Note died 17 Mar 1919 at 12:25
A.M. The immediate cause of death was chronic nephritis, that the contributory cause of death
was biliary calculus, and that he signed the death certificate to that effect.
(8) Affidavit – 1 May 1919 – Piatt Co, Illinois
Selah Van Note, aged 72, resident of Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois, states she is the widow of Morris
J. Van Note, deceased, and that she is one and the same person as Celia Van Note and Celah Van Note
whose names appear in claim for pension W.O. 1139103. Affiant further states that she is the
same person described and named in the Certificate of Record of Marriage issued by the clerk of County
Court, DeWitt Co, where her maiden names is given as Miss Celie McFeeters. Affiant further states
that her correct Christian name is Selah.
(9) Affidavit – 1 May 1919 – Piatt Co, Illinois
W. H. Firke, aged 67, resident at Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois, states that he has known Morris J.
Van Note, deceased, and Selah Van Note his wife for 30 years and knows that they lived continually
as husband and wife.
(10) Letter – 31 May 1919 - G. M. Saltzgaber, Commissioner, Civil War Division to Selah Vannote,
Mansfield, Illinois
Concerning Widow Original Pension #1139.103
"Your above entitled claim for pension requires the testimony of one person who knew you and the
soldier from the time of your marriage, or for at least thirty years, showing whether during that time
you and the soldier lived together as husband and wife, and were never divorced, to corroborate the
testimony of W. H. Fiske, now on file."
(11) Affidavit – 6 Jun 1919 – Piatt Co, Illinois
William Clemans, of Mansfield, Piatt Co, Illinois, aged 72, states he was a close neighbor and belonged
to the same Grand Army Post as Morris J. Van Note, deceased, and that he has known them for 35 years and
knows that they lived together continuously as husband and wife.
(12) Letter – 24 Jun 1919 – G. M. Saltzgaber, Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions,
Washington D.C. to Selah Vannote, Mansfield, Illinois

"In your above cited claim for pension you have alleged that soldier died March 18, 1919, whereas
the attending physician has stated that soldier died March 17, 1919, at 12:25 A M. This discrepancy
should be explained, under oath, by the party in error, and the correct date of his death established by
a certified copy of the public record.
"You should state under oath, whether any of your sons rendered any United States military or naval
service; and if so, his name; the full designation of his service; the dates and places of enlistment and
discharge; and whether you ever filed a claim of any character on account of such service."

"Chas. W. Hull M.D. being first duly sworn deposes and says the affidavit of May 1, 1919 sworn to
by him in regard to the death of Morris J. Van Note of Mansfield, Illinois, was in error in that he
stated that the said Morris J. Van Note died March 17, 1919 at 12:25 a.m., whereas he died March 18,
1919, at 12:25 a.m.

(16) Certificate of Record of Marriage – 18 Apr 1919 – DeWitt Co, Illinois
Morris J. Vannote and Miss Celie McFeeters were married 11 Jan 1868 by E. L. Waller, Minister
of the Gospel.
