Old Union Cemetery

Old Union Cemetery is located in Section 9 of Tunbridge Township. It is about a mile off the road between farmer's fields. This is the second oldest burial ground in the Township, the first burial being made in 1831. The last burial in 1924. This was the sight of the first Christian Church Organized in 1833. For five years sermons, weddings and funerals were held outside midst the trees. In 1838 a log church was built and this was used until 1864 when a new building was erected at a cost of $3,000.00 with accommodations for 600 people. Originally it was on the main road from Springfield to Bloomington. Today the nearest road is about 1/2 mile and few people know of the location. All signs of the church which had over 1,000 members is gone, and the old cemetery where over 500 pioneers were buried has less than 100 stones are there and many of those are in very poor condition, buried under plants and unreadable. The Hull lot which shows as a once elegant and beautiful adorned lot is now in shambles with more than half the fancy fence is gone. I have a list of known burials in this cemetery given to my mother by Oscar Cromwell.
